Happy seed catalogue season to all who celebrate!
Yes, the holidays are great and all, but what can compare to the feeling of getting a stack of fresh seed catalogues in your mailbox and hunkering down in a cozy chair to flip through the pages, filling your head (and depleting your bank account) with dreams and schemes for all the possibilities that next season will bring?
Yes, it’s niche and nerdy, but IYKYK.
In case it’s helpful, here are my go-to sources for high quality seeds – if you go to their websites (see the included links), you can usually request a physical seed catalogue to be sent to your home:
Johnny's Seeds – especially suited for larger-scale growers, Johnny’s is my one stop shop for high quality seeds (and all kinds of farming + gardening tools). I source the majority of my seeds from Johnny’s! They sell in bulk, but also in smaller seed packet sizes for home gardeners.
High Mowing Seeds – a 100% organic source for a wide range of seeds.
Floret Farm – a dazzling range of specialty flowers, carefully bred and grown right on their farm in Skagit Vally, WA. A note that their shop is only open a few times a year, so make sure to sign up for their newsletter to be the first to know!
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange – seeds specially bred and selected for optimal success in the south/mid-atlantic region.
Row 7 Seeds – experimental seeds bred for maximum deliciousness.
Baker Creek – known for their rare/heirloom seeds.
Last minute holiday gifting !
If you’re still looking for a unique, farm to table gift for your favorite gardener / food lover for the holidays, I’ve got a few ideas…
My healing herbal salve – dang, ya’ll sold these out FAST last week, so I whipped up another batch and restocked my website. It’s cool to see the same names of folks every year who buy these salves, usually stocking up on 4, 5, even 6 tins at a time!
A 1-year subscription to this newsletter! Print a gift card that you can wrap here.
A *virtual* private garden consultation with yours truly (ie the recipient can live anywhere)
A farm to table cooking class at our farm! Gift certificates available here.
And ICYMI, 2 weeks ago I shared a curated list of my Top 10 Kitchen Tools, which is filled with must-have culinary items for anyone who loves to cook.
Alright, time to get cooking and dig into this week’s new recipe – magical carrot & ginger soup – available for paid subscribers.
This soup is magic and I mean it.
I feel like everyone is a little (or a lot) sick right now, and before the holidays really arrive, we could all use as many immune-boosting foods as possible. Enter this magical carrot & ginger soup! From heaps of carrots and garlic to ginger, apple cider vinegar, coconut milk, etc – every single ingredient in this recipe is packed with nutrients to keep your body healthy in this chaotic season.
It also couldn’t be simpler to make. You basically throw a bunch of veggies together on a sheet pan, roast until tender, and then whiz everything together in a blender with some stock, coconut milk, apple cider vinegar, and ginger until velvety smooth.
But my favorite thing? When people taste how luscious and creamy it is, I always get asked how much butter, cream, etc it has… but this recipe is totally dairy free (not that there’s anything wrong with butter and cream! two of my favorite things… but *sometimes* less is more).
To me, this soup is the epitome of cooking + eating like a farmer – keep it simple and allow the farm fresh ingredients to really shine. I hope y’all love it as much as I do… stay healthy out there!
