Welcome to the Eat Like a Farmer Guide to Start a Garden!

This guide is focused on helping new and beginning gardeners gain the confidence to get gardening, and to help you have your most productive and abundant growing season yet.

Today, we’re kicking it off with Part 1: Establishing Goals & Garden Set-Up.

In today’s guide, we will cover the following:

  • Detailed questions to help you establish your garden goals

  • Extensive overview of different garden set-up options (and how to determine which garden set-up is best for your space)

  • Recommended resources and reading

  • Irrigation

  • Deer fencing

A note that the information inside these detailed guides comes from over 15 years of personal experience in gardening and farming, and I believe this knowledge has value. For that reason, the majority of this 4-part guide is available to paid subscribers. My hope is that if you find this information useful, that you will invest in your gardening endeavors and consider supporting my work as a paid subscriber. Either way, thank you for being here!

Establishing Goals

Before getting into the nitty gritty of building out your garden, there are some important questions to ask yourself. I *highly* encourage you to get out a pen + paper and write down your answers to these questions, as they will directly inform your garden goals (and ideal garden set-up) this season:

  1. What are the veggies, herbs, flowers, etc that you most want to grow (and eat) this season?

  2. What climate zone are you growing in?

    1. Find the plant hardiness zone specific to your zip code HERE.

  3. Roughly how much time per week do you (and/or other members of your home) want to spend working in your garden?
